Blackberry Curve 8320 OS 4.5 Review

My first impressions of my Blackberry Curve 8320 from T-Mobile were pretty good. I enjoyed the shape and feel the device in my hand. It wasn’t overly bulky or cumbersome. The OS seemed pretty decent as well. Not great, but gets the job done.

When I picked up my 8320 my buddy also picked up the new Blackberry Pearl. His Pearl had the new 4.3 OS (later re-numbered to 4.5 for the Curves) from RIM. My phone had the old 4.2. I was disappointed because 4.5 had some cool features. It was also lacking in some areas. The default browser was something other than a web browser, the media player was just rubbish, when trying to hand off between UMA and EDGE I would drop calls, and there was no video recording option.

Finally I had enough and decided to head over to the crackberry.com forums and install the beta 4.5 OS. The install took awhile to do. Probably an 1 to 1.5 hours total with downloading the OS file. Which is appx 75MB.

After running this OS for the last 24 hours or so I’ve come to the conclusion that it totally rocks. All the fore mentioned problems have been fixed with the exception of the dropped calls from UMA to EDGE since I haven’t had a chance to test this. Everything seems to be working with no problems. I haven’t run into any hiccups or hangups.

The media player is leaps and bounds ahead of the old media player. There are actual playlists now. The camera is no longer just for taking photos. You can now take video with it. The default web browser now acts like a REAL browser. Finally the last feature I’m excited about is the OTA updates. OTA? What is that? OTA stands for Over The Air. No more checking in to see if there are system updates. Now all you have to do it click a button and as much as I hate to say it. It’s similar to Windows Updates.

Granted there a few other features that I didn’t mention here. Something to do with documents and a few others.

All in all I can’t wait for the official version to come out. I’ve heard that this OS is going to come out for the past 3-4 months. Like clock work I’ll read something that says “I just talked to a rep and they said in 2 weeks we’ll have the official release” Yeah right. I’ve heard that every 2 weeks for months.

This OS gets my 2 thumbs up.
